Self-employed persons

Self-employed persons are a prescribed class of persons who may become permanent residents on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada and who are self-employed persons. To qualify, applicants must meet the minimum requirements for this class and obtain at least 35 out of 100 points in a points system for this class.
An applicant in this category must meet the definition of a self-employed person which is somebody who “has relevant experience and has the intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada and to make a significant contribution to specified economic activities in Canada, the “specified economic activities”; these are defined as “cultural activities and athletics.
The cultural activities include jobs generally seen as part of Canada’s artistic and cultural fields. Examples include; authors and writers, creative and performing artists, musicians, painters, sculptors and other visual artists, technical support and other jobs in motion pictures, creative designers and craftspeople, choreographers, set designers, coaches and trainers.
The maximum possible score is 100. The pass mark is currently 35 points, but it may change.
The select candidates are based on:
- the documents that you presented to the immigration
- The score under each of the selection criteria
- Meeting the definition of a self-employed person.
- Interview may require.
The five selections criteria for self-employed
- Education
Award points for the credential and years of study that the applicant has completed at the time the application is made. Maximum of 25 points for Ph.D. and Master’s degree holders and at least 17 years of full-time or full-time equivalent study. And a minimum of 5 points for completing high school.
- Work Experience
Maximum of 35 points for five years of relevant experience, and a minimum of 20 points for two years of relevant experience.
Relevant experience as defined for this program,
The cultural activities: two one-year periods of experience in self-employment in
cultural activities, two one-year periods of experience in participation at a
world-class level in cultural activities, or a combination of a one-year period
of experience in self-employment in cultural activities and a one-year period
of experience at a world-class level in cultural activities.
Athletics: two one-year periods of experience in self-employment in athletics,
two one-year periods of experience in participation at a world-class level in
athletics, or a combination of a one-year period of experience in self-employment
in athletics and a one-year period of experience at a world-class
level in athletics.
- Age
Award the applicant up to a maximum of 10 points for 21-49 years of age, and a minimum of 0 points under 17 years of age or 54 years of age or older on the date their application is received.
- Official Languages
Must prove the level of language proficiency you claim on your application for permanent residence.
High proficiency: in the first official language, 4 points for each language skill area if proficiency corresponds to a benchmark of 8 or higher; and in the second official language, 2 points for each language skill area if proficiency corresponds to a benchmark of 8 or higher.
- Adaptability
Award the applicant up to a maximum of 6 points for adaptability, Education of a spouse or common-law partner: 3 to 5 points Previous work in Canada- Applicant or spouse- One year
full-time work in Canada: 5 points (self-employed), Previous study in Canada- Applicant or spouse- Two years full-time post-secondary studies in Canada: 5 points (self-employed)
A family member in Canada: 5 points (self-employed).
