Sponsor your spouse, partner, common-law or child
If you’re eligible, you can sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada. In most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse or partner or dependent child.
– Eligibility to sponsor a spouse
Legally married to you and 18 years old. If you are a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent residents. Can’t sponsor someone if you’re a permanent resident living outside Canada.
You’re able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability. You can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor, so you should be able to Support them financially and make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government. However, if you’re receiving maternity, parental, or sickness benefits, you may still be eligible to sponsor.
– Eligibility to sponsor a Common-Law Partner
At least 18 years old, the common-law partner is a person who shares a conjugal relationship not married with another person. Has been living together for at least 12 consecutive months, meaning you’ve been living together continuously for 1 year in a conjugal relationship, without any long periods apart. Must show evidence of cohabitation in a conjugal relationship.

– Eligibility to sponsor a Conjugal Partner
At least 18 years old, not married to you or in a common-law relationship, has been in a relationship with you for at least 1 year and lives outside Canada. Can’t live with you in their country of residence or marry you because of significant legal and immigration reasons.

Sponsor your Child
A dependent child is a biological child or an adopted child of the parent who is in the following situation of dependency:
- Less than 22 and is not a spouse or common law partner, or
- 22 years of age or older and has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since before attaining the age of 22 years and is unable to be financially self-supporting due to a physical or mental condition.
