Temporary Resident Visas (TRV)

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is

An official counterfoil document issued by a visa officer and placed in the applicant’s passport to show that the foreign national has met the eligibility and admissibility requirements for a single entry or multiple entries to Canada as a temporary resident (e.g., as a visitor, student, or worker), Canada must submit a written application subject to an approval process.

A TRV is issued as a counterfoil document or a stamped impression on a document, by an officer from a Canadian visa office such as a Canadian consulate, an embassy, a high commission, or a visa application centre (VAC) outside Canada

that processes immigration applications.

The basic requirements

For the documents required all applicants 18 years old and above must complete, sign and date the following Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) forms, which include Application for Temporary Resident Visa, and family information.

Use of representative form only if they use the services of a representative or if they are appointing one. In addition to submitting the forms, applicants must:

  • Pay the application processing and biometric collection fee.
  • Submit the necessary supporting documents (such as a valid passport) to accompany their application.

An application package is considered complete when:

  • all questions on the application forms have been answered the fee has been paid and the forms have been validated.
  • Applicants who are required to provide biometric information will have a digital photo taken at the biometric collection and therefore are not required to submit any other photographs with their application.

Exemptions

  • Nationality. Citizens of numerous countries, including Australia, France, and    Britain, and citizens of British overseas territory, do not require a TRV to enter Canada, nor do nationals or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Documents. Foreign nationals do not require a TRV to enter Canada if they hold certain documents, including a diplomat’s passport, a passport or travel document issued by the Holy See, a national Israeli passport, or certain Hong Kong passports.
  • Purpose of entry. Foreign nationals may be exempt from the TRV requirement if they are members of a transportation crew, are passengers on an airplane landing in Canada for refuelling, or have come to Canada for an interview with a US consular officer regarding re-admission to the USA.

Letter of Invitation:

A letter of invitation will be required in order to satisfy the officer that the foreign national intends only to visit temporarily and to leave at the end of the authorized period. A letter of invitation is always required for Super Visa applicants.

The purpose of a letter of invitation is to demonstrate that the “host;’ who is a relative or friend and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, promises to support the applicant while visiting Canada.
